Get Fit, Burn Fat, Save Money, Time and the Planet – Get a Bike!

This morning I received my cycle insurance documents through the post, which means that I have had my lovely bike for a whole year. During this last year I have rekindled my passion for cycling, and am truly nuts about it. There is so much to shout about that is brilliant about cycling; you get fitter, you can get places faster than in the car, you do not have to queue in traffic, you are keeping slimmer, you are helping save the planet, you feel free as a bird!
Here are some approximate statistics from my year of cycling to work to get you thinking:
? Cost of my bike including panniers, lights, reflective jacket, insurance etc: ?500 (paid in installments of ?50 a month interest free).
? Minimum petrol saved: ?550.
? Parking costs saved: ?300.
? Days I couldn't face cycling to work (I did cycle in the snow): 5!
? Miles cycled to work: 1700 (2736 Km).
? Calories burnt cycling to work (not including the weight of the panniers and the fact that I cycle like a demon!): 360,000 Kcal (worth 97.2 lbs/ 42.14 Kilos body fat): that is 1286 mars bars!
? One journey between jobs took a minimum of 30 minutes through lunchtime city-centre traffic, and 5 minutes through cycle paths on my bike. That is 25 hours spent in the car, versus just over 4 hours cycling. Time saved: 20 hours; nearly a whole day of horrid traffic jam stress!
? My car journeys to work would have emitted 547kg of carbon into the atmosphere. In order to offset this (remove the damage), I would have needed to plant 28 mature trees.
? Smug feeling while sailing past vast queues of gridlocked traffic; immeasurable!
If you live in the UK and think that you could cycle to work, then check out the Department of Transports scheme, where anyone can claim back up to 50% of the cost of a new bike through their employers. Cycling to work and back will help burn up any accumulated stress hormones floating around your body, leaving you less stressed and generally healthier;. Visit http://www.cyclescheme.co.uk to see how much you can save on a bike, and http://www.bikeforall.net/ for further details. Wherever you live in the world plot your cycling/walking/running miles to work (or play), along with the amount of calories you could burn; http://www.gmap-pedometer.com Even if you do not travel to work, you can dust off your bike, and get cycling; saving time, stress, money and boosting your health and enjoyment of life.
Until next time,
On yer bike!
